While selecting workshops for your students, keep in mind that the grade levels are a general guideline. Reading about the content of the learning opportunities enables you to see if the content matches your children's developmental stages. Also keep in mind that all sessions are planned with open-ended differentiated instruction so that everyone's needs are met.
A.I.M.S.
Activities Integrating Math and Science are lessons designed around a theme that includes all hands-on experiments and activities. Students complete the week with a notebook filled with journaling that covers numerous math and science standards. All lessons are designed to match varying developmental stages of learning.
Author's Book Club
Book Clubs are designed to feature a well loved children's author. I present the books as a Read Aloud and include various hands-on activities as extensions of each book in Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Art. Students complete a whole bag full of projects by the end of the week! Parents receive an Overview Handout that describes each day's objectives and lessons. Your student does not need to be a reader in order to attend a Book Club. All lessons are designed to match varying developmental stages of learning.
Narrative Writing
Narrative Writing tells a fictional story or a personal accounting of an experience. Often referred to as Creative Writing, the author may craft a story with a little bit of both! Instruction includes developing a setting, characters, and a plot. Authentic literature selections are used as the springboard to writing. Teaching approach to writing is based on the 6-Trait Writing model implementing Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice, and Conventions.
Expository Writing
Expository pieces explain an event, concept, or idea using facts and examples in an organized manner. Hence, it is non-fiction writing and is a mode in which the author's purpose is to inform, explain, or describe a subject. Teaching approach to writing is based on the 6-Trait Writing model implementing Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Voice, and Conventions. The Organization trait is addressed using an adaptation of the Four-Square graphic organizer which enables writers to outline and organize their thoughts before starting to write. The completed writing pieces include an Introduction, three supporting paragraphs, and a Conclusion.
Persuasive Writing
This writing genre states the opinion of the writer and attempts to influence the reader to change views or at the very least, consider another perspective. It may command the reader to take action. The Basic Debate Format is utilized wherein each supporting paragraph includes a pro and a con.
